Silica gel is a granular porous silica hydrate prepared by washing and drying sodium silicate with acid, and is mainly used as a desiccant and as an adsorbent in column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Although the name is "glue", it is actually a solid with a transparent or milky white appearance. Silicone is sometimes referred to as silica gel, but is actually a silicon-containing compound that is completely different in nature and use.
